GOALTENDING TIPS FROM THE PROS - Squareness
July 21st, 2008

MAXIMIZE THE AREA YOU COVER: While in your stance, make yourself as big as possible keep your catching glove up and out. It shouldn’t cover the same area your arm is covering. Is your blocking glove out to the side and not covering where your leg pad is? Is your stick flat on the ice? Proper placement of your gloves and stick are also very important while making save movements to maintain your largest coverage area.

STAY SQUARE TO THE PUCK: Think about how a goalie moves around the crease. It is more or less the shape of a V. When the puck is in the middle of the ice, a goalie is at their highest point at the top of the crease. When the puck moves out to the sides of the rink you start to turn and aim your shoulders towards the posts. The closer it gets to the end boards the more you turn your shoulders to the posts. Remember your imaginary line to the puck and standing over it and you always stay square to the puck.
